INTRODUCTION - FROM DEBILITATING SHYNESS TO BECOMING A TELEVISION NEWS ANCHOR

I was about to take a college final exam - an oral class presentation. That day, I found myself pacing, sweating, and my heart racing even though I was overly prepared. I paced in front of the campus building until I realized it was too late - I had missed my final! I ran back to my apartment, threw myself on my bed, with tears streaming. My fear had overpowered me.

My entire life had been filled with the fear of speaking up, raising my hand, or being called on by teachers. I knew all the tricks, like dropping my pencil or gazing down at the precise moment I knew the teacher was looking to call on someone. I even begged my mom to write a note to a music teacher in middle school to get out of singing a few notes in a solo exercise. But after missing my college final, I knew I had to overcome this debilitating fear.

I went to see my professor and explained. Luckily, he gave me a second chance. I remember that day vividly when I stood before my class, note cards shaking in my hands. The first minute was hard, but after I delved into my presentation, I remember thinking it wasn't as difficult as my mind had made it out to be.

As a consequence, I became determined to overcome this huge fear and lack of self-confidence. I began by taking a speech class the next semester. Next, I started taking more communication classes. After a couple of years, I found myself majoring in Communications. Was it easy? No! Was it worth it? Absolutely! It all boiled down to reframing my thoughts. My journey eventually led to a career as a television news anchor (more about that in upcoming blogs).
